Protect Your Haul: A Quick Halloween Safety Guide!
Halloween night is for treats, not tricks. Get ready for a safe night of neighborhood fun with this essential safety checklist from your partners in protection (that's us!).
1. Be Seen, Stay Safe (Costume & Visibility)
- Light Up the Night: Make your little ghosts and goblins visible! Carry a flashlight or glow sticks, and add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags.
- Keep Eyes Clear: Opt for face paint instead of masks that can block vision, leading to trips or missed cars.
- Prevent Trips: Choose costumes that fit well and are short enough to prevent tripping. Check that all materials are flame-resistant.
2. Street Smart Rules
- Walk with Caution: Always use sidewalks. If there isn't one, walk at the far edge of the street facing traffic.
- Cross at Corners: Cross only at marked crosswalks or street corners. Look both ways and make eye contact with drivers.
- Stay Together: Younger children must be accompanied by an adult. Older kids should stick to a planned route and stay in a group.
- No Uninvited Guests: Only visit homes with a porch light on. Never enter a home or car for a treat.
3. Check the Treat Bag
- Wait to Eat: Institute a "no eating while walking" rule. Treats must be inspected at home first.
- Toss Anything Suspect: Discard any candy that is unwrapped, opened, or looks suspicious. If it's homemade and you don't know the person, toss it.
- Be Allergy Aware: Check ingredient labels carefully, especially if you have allergies.
